Marriage Registration in Thailand
If you are getting married in Thailand, here are the steps to follow:
Obtain a Certificate of No Impediment
Visit your embassy in Thailand to obtain an affidavit of freedom to marry.
Have it translated and legalized
The document must be translated into Thai by a certified translator, then legalized at the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Register at the District Office
Go together to the district office (Amphoe) with your documents and 2 witnesses. Registration is free.
Receive the marriage certificate
You receive the Thai marriage certificate (Kor Ror 3) the same day. This document will be used for the visa application.
One-Year Extension Process
Once in Thailand with your 90-day O visa, you can apply for a one-year extension at Immigration:
- Visit Immigration before the initial visa expires
- Provide proof of 400,000 THB in a Thai bank account (amount must have been there for at least 2 months)
- Present all supporting documents proving the family relationship
- Pay the extension fee: 1,900 THB
- The extension is valid for 1 year and renewable annually
90-Day Reporting
Even with a one-year extension, you must report your address every 90 days at Immigration (TM.47 form, online or in person).
Rights and Restrictions
The family O visa does not automatically grant the right to work in Thailand. If you wish to work, you must:
- Obtain a separate Work Permit
- Have a Thai employer to sponsor your application
- The work permit is independent from the family visa
Our Tips
💡 Practical advice
- Open a Thai bank account quickly — The 400,000 THB must be in a Thai account for at least 2 months before the extension application.
- Prepare all documents in advance — Translations and legalizations can take several weeks.
- Don't let your visa expire — Overstay results in a fine of 500 THB/day and can jeopardize future applications.
- Get a re-entry permit — If you need to leave Thailand temporarily, obtain a re-entry permit (1,000 THB) to keep your extension.
- Consider permanent residency — After 3 consecutive years with an O visa, you can apply for Thai permanent residency.
